How to look after an automatic watch

Wind it, wear it, service it every five years. A simple guide to keeping a mechanical watch running for decades.

An automatic watch winds itself as you move. Look after it and it will outlive you; ignore it and it will still probably outlive your phone.

Keep it wound

If you haven’t worn it for a couple of days, give the crown 20–30 gentle turns before setting the time.

Avoid magnets

Speakers, laptop lids and phone cases can magnetize a movement and make it run fast. Keep it a few inches away overnight.

Service every five years

A service cleans and re-oils the movement. Our Field Watch is covered for two years, and we can arrange servicing after that.
